Description

These two dresses are shown in the display entitled "Godey's Ladies: An Exhibition of 19th Century Dresses held at the Brick Store Museum in 1997. Godey's Lady's Book, which inspired this exhibition's title, was one of the most popular ladies' books of the 19th century. Each issue contained poetry, beautiful engravings and articles of interest to the women of that time.

The dress on the left, worn by Mary B. Hunt at her wedding to John B. Goodnow in Sudbury, Massachusetts, is a one piece blue and brown plaid silk taffeta dress. It has sloping shoulders with a V-shaped yoke and the bodice is boned and lined. Straight sleeves and bodice are trimmed with brown velvet ribbon. The closure has brown velvet covered buttons. Skirt is gathered in the back with slight train and is lined in brown cotton.

The dress on the right is a one piece dark green cotton broadcloth dress. The bodice has a high collar, 3/4 length sleeves trimmed with green velvet ribbon, front closure of wooden buttons covered in crocheted work. Fully lined with brown cotton and bodice is boned. The skirt is gored with slight train with green velvet ribbon trim. The hem is lined with brown polished cotton and bound in green wool.
