Description

The 1925-ton ship Reuce was built at Kennebunk Lower Village in 1881 in the shipyard of Captain Nathaniel Lord Thompson. It had three decks, was 229.2 feet long, 41 feet in breadth, and 27 feet in depth. It was built for Captain George H. Theobold of Bowdoinham, Maine.

It was under the command of Captain Benjamin Adams of Bowdoinham for much of its working life. In October 1883 it sailed from Astoria for Japan. It was sold in California in 1900 and wrecked on the coast of Japan in 1922.

The photograph shows it under construction. Notice the oxen (lower right). Oxen hauled heavy loads in shipyards.
