Description

The three-masted Julia Frances was designed by Captain Zebina Chase of New Bedford, Mass., and built by David Clark at Kennebunkport.

She was small (only about 110 feet long) and of shallow draft. She, and others like her, were built for New Bedford and Fall River owners to be used for the southern fruit and oyster trade.

The photograph shows her in the Kennebunk River on her launching day in 1889. The view in the background is to Chase Hill in Kennebunk Lower Village.
